I have had trouble deciding on a title for this piece. The black and white drawing that sits inside the black brocade plastic wallpaper (tablecloth actually) was accepted in the most recent Walker Art Center coloring book sponsored by MNartists.org. I describe those shapes as being ‘pet bottles’, stylized shapes resembling a cross between laundry detergent bottles and cherished pets perched on comfy cushions. Why? Well, it’s a long story. Did you see my show at the Soap Factory in 1999? If so, it may make more sense.
My friend and neighbor Jennifer has come to describe the piece as ‘The Howard Johnson Theory of Evolution’. I eventually realized that the blue-and-orange color scheme I felt compelled to work resurrected strong childhood memories of staying at the then popular motel chain. The often disturbingly biomorphic bottles seemed to suggest the evolution of plastic containers from wilder, tail-bearing ancestors to more domesticated versions.
These are primarily observations and associations made after the fact. I’m open to input. What’s your take?
Here’s a drawing from the show: Pillows, pen / marker/gouache on paper

And one more:

Below is the drawing that was in the Walker Art Center Coloring book. Still on sale for only $10!
BBelow is another ‘Pillow’ drawing. I actually intend on making ‘picture pillows’. Just need a good sewing machine and a material budget.
